His father, Samuel Abramovich Kaufman, was a famous doctor. The literary abilities of David Samoilov appeared very early: he began to compose poetry at the age of 6-7 years. Carried away by the historical prose of the writer, the eighth grader of Samoilov transferred the story “Spartak” into drama in poetry, “Phoenician ship” into a poem. His first publication - the poem “Hunting for Mammoth” - appeared in the third issue of October magazine in a year. He signed as David Kaufman Pseudonym Samoilov, educated on behalf of his father, the poet took after the end of the Great Patriotic War.
David Samoilov wanted to be volunteered for the Finnish war, but could not, since he was not suitable for health reasons. In June, he was sent to the labor front. Samoilov was supposed to dig trenches near Vyazma, but after a while he was seriously ill. Later he was evacuated to Samarkand, where he began to attend classes at the evening pedagogical institute. David Samoilov also entered the Military Public School, but could not graduate, because he was already sent to the Volkhov front near Tikhvin in the year.

After the treatment, the poet again served in the rear, but already in March of the next year he continued to serve in the 3rd separate engineering of the intelligence department of the headquarters of the 1st Belorussian Front.
